On the basis of the analyses of the lake sediment in Chaohu Lake, Holocene environmental changes have been reconstructed in this basin. The Holocene Optimum occurred at 6000-2000 aBP in the Chaohu Lake Basin, showing the best conditions of water and heat, especially 6000-5000 aBP, which reflected the most warm-moist climate condition. Namely, the mixed forest of deciduous broad-leaved trees and evergreen broad-leaved trees occupied most areas of this basin. After around 5000 aBP, the climate and environment changed from warm-moist to relatively warm-dry conditions during the middle Holocene, then temperature and humidity decreased gradually. An obvious drying event occurred in around 2000 aBP, and the Chaohu Lake experienced a large-scale retreat during which the water level reached its lowest level possibly exposing the lakebed. During 2000-1000 aBP, the climate and environment transformed from warm to cool with evident forest shrinkage; this was a climate transitional period which was characterized by the vegetation change. Pollen concentrations of Cyclobalanopsis and Quercus, which were always the constructive species within the forest, decreased rapidly at this time, and the vegetation changed from the mixed forest of deciduous broad-leaved trees and evergreen broad-leaved trees to the grassland with Gramineae as the main components.
